The quote above by Albert Einstein was said in response to a question about the meaning of the theory of relativity. At the time, Einstein was working on his theory of Special Relativity. The Theory of Relativity proposes that all motion is relative to the observer. As an example, if you are driving along at a steady speed and suddenly stop your car, you will say that you suddenly stopped.

However, your friends who are riding next to you will say that you suddenly stopped because you were suddenly moving forward. This is because they are not moving relative to you. Relativity also suggests that time is not constant.

To illustrate this point, imagine if time stopped completely; then everyone could observe any point in time at once (not necessarily now). The Theory of Relativity states that all motion is relative to the observer, and this makes it impossible for any two people to experience the same version of time.
